Just change family names and clan/guild names if the same, leave main name as is, and add family name to chat etc. Pre ordered to get the names, lazy coding kind of sucks. No need to rush crossplay, sort the names out.

Yup they should honestly do that, it will be more ez to do if they add family and same name in chat. No one will get mad if they do it that way, honestly im fine changing  my family name, but im not ok losing my name that i got on the first day. If they do it like that i bet it wont bring toxicity up since most people dont really care about their family names, they are care more about the names they got in the first place. People only got the Ultimate edition to get the names that they wanted, they really didn't care about family names cause its whatever. They should just adopt the concept of people having the same name, but different family names. Most Mmos especially Japanese mmos do this. Its either they do this make everyone happy, or go follow the route they were going and make people quit the game. If they choose to do this it might effect their sales on their upcoming game crimson desert. People will remember what they did in BDO, and people wont buy their next game for causing such a huge problem. At the end of the day its up to them, i just hope they make a good one that will make their fans happy, So that we can play more of their games in the future.

theres only one problem, what if i deleted my character that i had as a name reservation and created a other class that wasnt out at day one with that name. Then the other person would have had the name effectivly earlier no?

That is unfortunate.

Your 2 week old character would lose out to some one who committed earlier in the game cycle then you.

But it was only a very fair solution due to gap in release dates. So you are safe for now

Changing the family name is much more worse. If I would loose my family name, I would leave the game finally.

In playing this game everyday for over a year I have built up friendships, rivalries, a reputation on my character under my name(s). Taking that away is more that just disappointing to me. It's against the entirety of what a Role Playing Game is about. The vast majority of people do not adopt a different persona. Instead they make themselves in the game and a name is a functioning tether to the rest of the experience.
For the players as a whole please take some time and figure out a solution that does not punish those who have been the most dedicated to the game. Those who made sure we were in as early as possible and have never left.

If/when you see this PearlAbyss, Thank you for listening to us and taking the time to get more feedback. The consistency you show in communication will mean more than any decision in the whole Cross-play update.

Name Change fix on Crossplay! <-- Click, This is a huge step for Pearl Abyss.... it is nice to see them looking out for the community here and accepting something reasonable for the community! I take back my last statement this is huge. Please Pearl Abyss keep going in this direction with your players. 🤗

Updated the thread. A solution has been offered by PA which seems to give everyone an equal right for their name.

Cheers guy

Sounds for me fair. First come, first serve.

I play Black Desert since the Beta and Early Access on the XBox and since the time of the creation of the names are important, my family and guild name will definitely stay. For character names, it can be differently. I have created 6 of my 17 chars after the PS4 release.

Almost hate being right, but this solution was the only common sense option we had with a split release.

The downside is playstation may have an advantage in shai names if it was closer to their release, etc.

Thank you PA for finding a reasonable and fair solution. I want to especially thank the CMs for making this a top priority. The CMs heard the community and stressed our concerns. My faith in the CMs and PA have been restored.

I'm wondering what will happen in regards with specifically Kuno names. Will they go by console release for them, or by relativity to terms of time from specific console release for the class?

Apparently they did not follow their own policy.  My family named was changed and I am a day 1 xbox player that has played every day since release.  According to the linked article, I should have retained my family name.  I had 1 character name that was changed as well.

They said it went down to the seconds in some instances so you just lost the race from a ps4 day 1 player

I'm not buying it.  I bought the ultimate edition which meant I was in the first group to join.  The entire reason was to claim my name(s).  I created "blank" toons with the names I want then go back and delete them once the rush is over.  I spent almost zero time in the creator and entered almost immediately.  That would mean a PS4 player would have had to bought the ultimate edition, done exactly the same things I did, AND selected the exact same family name (which isn't all that common).  While it is certainly possible, it is HIGHLY unlikely.

Yeah deleting the character resets your timer so saving those names didn't help you at all

As the guy above me said.

The second you deleted your character with that saved name, and remade a new char with that name, the "Day you made that name" then became your original creation day.

As for your family name, what is it?

This wouldn't affect your family name.  Just the first name which all of mine are fine.  It's my family that was changed.  Like I said, it IS possible but very unlikely given the speed at which I created my first toon.

Just logged in after taking a break to play other games (because keeping on top of multiple ongoing online games is like that...), and ...nah, this is a really bad way of handling this.

It was bad enough to begin with, because surely there's no need for unique family/character names, if everyone has a unique Gamertag or PSN ID to identify their accounts (and all the characters per account). Or at the very least, if family names have to be unique, then what does it matter if two characters have the same personal name? If someone's family name is "Smith", and another's is "Jones", then they can both be called "Dave", because one would effectively be "Dave Smith" (or "Smith_Dave", depending on how the game stores the information) and the other "Dave Jones".

Personally, I reckon Pearl Abyss would be better off adding a new system of account/login usernames for the game, and make those unique (or at least use family names as account names like that), and then remove the need for unique character names (because the game would be able to tell the difference between a "Dave" on one unique account, and the "Dave" on another account). Virtually every other online console game does something like that (or just uses Gamertags/PSN IDs for that purpose), so I don't see why Black Desert can't adopt a similar system - and in doing so, make this whole unique name problem a non-issue.

[edit] Okay,  so watching the Q&A stream, they're saying that you'd need a way to identify people in chat - which is simple, if you do the same as most console MMOs (Star Trek Online, for instance). If my account name is "USSExcelsior", and my character's name above their head is "Dave", then it'd show up in chat as "Dave@USSExcelsior" (so <character name>@<account name>).

Alternatively (and this'd probably be simpler to implement), just add invisible suffixes to names (all names, even), so that all names are unique in the game database.

I.e., when you input a family/character name, the game adds extra characters on the end, but only displays the bit you created.

For instance, if I called my character "Dave", the name would actually be saved as "Dave_BDC739" in the database, but more like "Dave_BDC739", with the suffix hidden in-game.

...or something like that - obviously any solution depends on how things are done currently, and what's less likely to mess up existing structures (dialogue text, chat, etc.). But again, I definitely think it's worth doing something - the unique name system wasn't great to begin with, IMO, and people losing names because of the recent crossplay merger has made it even worse. And it's made all the more frustrating by the fact that virtually every other online game out there has this figured out - BDO is the only game where I've spend ages trying to find a name that wasn't taken, and definitely the only game where I ended up losing that name because of arbitrary and avoidable limitations.
