What keeps you going in BDO?

Recommended Posts

This question is mainly directed towards long term ex/current PC players. What is it that keeps you playing this game year after year? What makes you want to reroll fresh on Xbox & do it all again?

I've played BDX since release & have currently decided that the game just doesn't have that long term appeal that I've had from other MMOs in the past. Xbox has pretty much went through about 2 years worth of content in about 6 months or so & it's all became a bit mundane & repetitive. I found myself asking the question 'is this as good as it gets?' quite a few times over the past few months. From what I see & read from the PC version of the game is that it's just more of the same to come. A few nice looking new areas & more mobs with different skins to grind. When you take away the nice graphics & smooth combat system the game really lacks any meaningful end game content. Aakman/Hystria are just more of the same apart from the fact that the mobs hit harder & take longer to kill. Boss content/rifts etc are just attendance based zerg fest's & lifeskilling/worker empire keeps you going for a few months but once you have a okay understanding it's just AFKing rather than playing the game.  PvP endgame is a complete joke & is pretty much an unplayable mess when you start doing anything over 30 man. BA was fun for a few months, but the lack of actual competitive PvP content gets boring really fast.

So yeah what is it has made this game last for years on the PC & kept the playerbase happy to keep spending cash on the ever ingenious pearl shop p2w/pfc ideas the Devs keep implementing?

I can see how it might keep a person who's never played MMOs engaged for a year or two, but as a veteran MMO player the appeal wore off pretty fast for me. Loved it for the first 4/5 months & then the lack of actual endgame competitive content took it toll.

Dead inside. Also nice to sometimes throw music on and hit the grind. Not alot of instant gratification which plagues other games. Which gives me more satisfaction when i look at my characters and other ppl character progress. Knowing where we start to where we are.

Nothing, i just realised after 3 years on PC and after year on Xbox, i realised theres nothing to do.... Life skills are pretty muich useless as almost nothing sells on the market that makes huge profit, PVP is boring as hell as on Node Wars, there are so few OP guilds that each has its own nodes without any struggle to keep them.

As a Shai, i am pretty much bored as hell, as "new content" altar of blood is not available for Shais, camels are off limit too.

Also rerolling in this game is way too expensive. As if You wanna reroll Your main, YOu have to go thro the trouble of purchasing weights, inventory, life skilling outfits.

I have progressed my gear as far as i could, build an AP build, also a DP build, worth billions on accesories, just to realise that its still useless against some classes i do not want to mentiion.

Hate.....pure unadulterated hatred of the over powered Wizards, Witches and Sorceress who completely melt me even when I have 350 DP.  Everyone I know has quit playing on PS4 because of this and the grind.

The fact that it is NOT an easy game to master keeps me here. A combination of both decent gear and a pretty solid understanding of the class you are playing is how you become a decent bro player. There are so many things to be done in the game. I like how complex it can be and requires research in most cases. I love the real time changes to the surroundings they did for the Christmas event, I hope to see more like that ... its just a great game, it takes patience to play it imo.

I agree that at first the game seems very in depth & requires a fair amount of research mainly towards lifeskilling/worker empire. Actual gameplay isn't really difficult to master IMO, but I played MMOs on & off for years.

I've actually quit the game now, but I was mainly interested to see what kept people playing after years of doing the same thing. I think personally the game kept me engaged for about 6 months before I fully explored & learnt about most aspects in the game & then it all become a bit dull.

I've been on the PC version for 5 years and I am going to quit the PC version and come back to the Xbox version because I hear that you can Auto grind while AFK.

no one will tell me if this is true or false and I would like to know before I pay for another live membership...

So what kept you playing for 5 years? Are you still doing the same thing you were doing 3-4 years ago? i.e grinding mobs, but in different areas or did something new get added along the way that keeps you wanting to play?

As far as I know there's no afk grinding unless it got added in the last month or so. I have seen people afk grinding in places like Hexe with level 49s. Usually with witch/wiz, they set a controller to auto rotate & it spams a ranged attack killing the mobs (I'm guessing they modify an old controller with duck tape or something). I'm sure T4 pets have extended range so you would probably need those to actually make any decent coin from it.

got my guru cooking last night which was a goal i was aiming for a couple of months now. felt amazing to reach it especially on EU since theres only 1 other person whos guru cook.

i mainly pushed it for bragging rights and swag rank medals lol.

basically killing time until we get ocean content since its the main thing that drives to me to stick in bdx. until its out im going to try and be as prepared as possible to enjoy the content to the fullest.

to be honest pve / pvp is a lackluster for me and i find no intrest in it whatsoever so lifeskills is what i focus on.

I went back to the pc version and am now re looking into the xbox version because of a few things.

I don't like KAKAO

Pearl Abyss runs the Console versions of Black Desert as well as they are the developers. That is a good thing imo.

Feels more fresh on console to me.

Less taxing on my PC hooked to my 50 inch. I can play with ease on my 50 inch with my xbox one x.

I have a friend who streams the game and is trying to build a guild. He's learning all he can through experience and has got me interested past character creation and running around for a few levels when I got it on PC on sale at the end of 2017. Playing without SSD is tough but I want to pay him back.

I haven't tried the training dummies yet myself. A million an hour seems kind of pricey, but it depends how much of a level you get. I mean, I guess I could grind for an hour and get 10 million then afk for 10 hours and spend the 10 million.  I wonder if you get disconnected how the timer would work.

"We have added training dummies to Black Desert. By purchasing a training manual from Jamie Drucker, you will be able to spend a varying amount of time honing your skills on non-moving targets. These training manuals cost silver to purchase, and are available in Velia, Heidel, Calpheon, Altinova and Valencia. Once you have the manual, head to the training dummies and press △ to begin the training.

When using the Training Manual, you will be able to gain Combat and Skill EXP at a significantly lower rate than fighting monsters, however the EXP you gain will still be subject to other Combat EXP buffs such as Golden Bells, Hot Time Events, Milk Tea, Scrolls."

Tried a training manual yesterday. While pretty heavily buffed with exp bonuses I got exactly 3.032% experience in level 58 in one hour. Looks like exp runs in 3 minute increments, in other words it's not continuous like it is when you are grinding mobs.

I imagine that a more typical rate would be 1.5-2% of level 58 exp per hour if you were running overnight on a 10 hour training manual, meaning that  you could perhaps level from 58.0 to 59.0 in five nights at a cost of 50 million, assuming no disconnects (which for me would be a lot to assume). Still, that's not bad imho, especially if you find grinding really boring.

These posts make me chuckle.. all very black and white... you play bdo or you dont.

I still play bdo. I also play other games. I realise to be in the top guilds or the top teir pvp you need to be on every hour of every day... but that's soul destroying.

I grind when I feel like it, I lifeskill when I'm in the mood, I afk stuff if im not playing anything else for a break.

If you stop trying to be the top 1 or 2 % of players and realise you'll surpass most players by casual play over a year or 2 than constant 24 hr grinding over 6 months then burn out and never play again lol

Its bdo what's the rush.

It's not really black and white though is it? I'm curious why people play an mmo for years that has no real endgame. I don't consider grinding to be endgame, in most MMOs it's a means to getting better equipment/upgrades/rep/gear etc so you can perform better in actual meaningful end game content or a competitive PvP scene. BDO offers non of that.

I mean if you like spamming a few buttons & mindlessly killing mobs over and over then this is the game for you. The lifeskill system is very good, but it's more of a afk game once you understand it and have it set up the way you want.

That's my point bud, playing bdo becomes a shade of gray..

As I said I still play but not obsessively  and only when I'm in the mood, I'll often spend a week or two on other games and come back to bdo when I'm ready.

The endgame in bdo has always been the same, being able to beat people in pvp for the best grind spots tou can or best passive income from nodes ect. All the gear and grinding is just a means to that end.

The point i was trying to make is you can achieve a decent pvp level by playing constantly for a shorter period or sporadically  over a longer period, almost everyone starts out going hammer and tongs to get high fast, most burn out and quit, the ones who realise you can play casually after a point t and still be competitive with 80% of other players are the ones that in my opinion get the most fun from bdo. The top 1 or 2 % of players work like a dog  to stay there and ...it doesn't last , the meta will change and screw you.

Also there is always something to worm on if you want to.. always another life skill to learn and get good with, or a new item to work on upgrading or aspect of the game to help new players with.

If there are people out there with full pen gear that are gurus  in every lifeskill and a to  of money left fair play but I haven't met them.

You asked what keeps me going I enjoy getting better slowly, actually trying all the different **** to do, not  just what makes the most money or levels me fastest.

Also in time some of the people who have got bored and left may well come back when new content drops.. but at that point will be well behind the turtles that have kept inching the gear score forward.
